You? Chopped Liver? That'd be an improvement....

Whoever came up with the phrase "..and what am I, chopped liver?" either never tasted chopped liver, or was struggling to get the phrase out right. It is pretty delicious. Of course, it is one of those dishes that you either love or makes you nauseous. I wouldn't say I "grew up on" chicken livers, but my mom did make them from time to time. I was always "meh" about them. The taste was rather strong, so if I was in the mood for it, it was tasty, but if not, I loathed the smell trickling all the to the back of the house in my bedroom. The solution to all of this of course was my discovery of chopped liver. Because chopped liver is mixed and blended with other ingredients, it takes away the over-bearing flavor. Served with red onion & tomato on a couple slices of Rye bread is where it's at.....Yum...I recently was in Hollywood and made a stop at Canter's deli, and I had probably the best chopped liver sandwich I have ever eaten.......check this shit out, you!

What kind of blogger would I be unless I left you with a recipe to make your own collection of this brown gold known as chopped liver? Here ya go!

Chopped Liver!

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken livers
  • 1 cup rendered chicken fat
  • 2 cups medium-diced yellow onion (2 onions)
  • 1/3 cup Madeira wine
  • 4 extra-large eggs, hard-cooked, peeled, and chunked
  • 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley leaves
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch cayenne pepper

Directions

Drain the livers and saute them in 2 batches in 2 tablespoons of the chicken fat over medium-high heat, turning once, for about 5 minutes, or until just barely pink inside. Don't overcook the livers or they will be dry. Transfer them to a large bowl.

In the same pan, saute the onions in 3 tablespoons of the chicken fat over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, or until browned. Add the Madeira and deglaze the pan, scraping the sides, for about 15 seconds. Pour into the bowl with the livers.

Add the eggs, parsley, thyme, salt, black pepper, cayenne, and the remaining chicken fat to the bowl. Toss quickly to combine. Transfer half the mixture to the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Pulse 6 to 8 times, until coarsely chopped. Repeat with the remaining mixture. Season, to taste, and chill.

Shaaadooooow.....Yuck! Tomatoes.....mmmm!

So I went outside just now to check on the tomato plant. It's sprouting about 20 tomatoes at the moment, and I got distracted by the sight of my dog Shadow tearing into a mouse, and when I say tearing in....I mean INTO it....the thing was like ripped open....nasty...just...ewwwww.......Well lets cleanse that mental image with a picture of my tomato plant.....

If there was ever a need to sound THESE horns....

Congrats Dems for not forcing a vote on middle-class tax cuts before an election you are probably going to have your ass handed too. Most polls show the majority of Americans agree with a middle-class tax cut while not giving the tax cut to the top 2% It isn't any guarantee this vote alone would have saved any potential seats, but it definitely wouldn't have done you any harm. This is one of the many reasons I cannot associate with this political party even though I tend to agree overall with them a lot more on the issues. It feels like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat has done his spinal rip fatality on an entire party.....and for that you get this...

What I've been watching on TV lately....

Boardwalk Empire started a couple of weeks ago and it is pretty good so far. It is hard to make a "bad" gangster tv show, but it is probably equally as hard to make one that separates itself from the pack. I never felt The Sopranos lived up to it's hype after the 2nd season, so it is nice to see a show about a different era of the mob and some new fresh casting choices.

Dexter season 5 just started. What else do I need to say? Besides Big Love, this is probably my favorite show currently going. I don't want to say much because it would be hard to talk about this season premiere without spoiling events from the past season. Lets just say, if you don't watch Dexter, START....NOW.

SNL just started up again. The season debut was kind of flat. Katy Perry was the musical guest and she kind of sucked a lot, live. Not surprisingly. The show itself, was just ok. Cameos by Justin Timberlake(yes, again) did not make matters any better. Why Andy Sandburg, Why?

Weeds is going strong in season 6, I like this season a lot more than seasons 4 & 5. Not quite back to the strength of Seasons 1-3(which really was probably the ideal way to end the series).

Top Chef D.C. just wrapped up, and Top Chef: just desserts has started. The desserts version is just ok, not as strong as the normal show. What is going to kill though, is Top Chef all-stars. Basically all the people over the first six seasons who came in 2nd or 3rd place, are all coming back to compete again.

Ultimate Fighter: Team GSP vs. Team Kosceck is pretty good so far. I have been surprised at how low-key Kosceck has been so far, but I remember the preview for this week's episode showing a scuffle involving him I thing(it aired last night, I have it DVR'd).

With October coming up, TCM is doing it's usual halloween-themed movies, so be sure to get your Hammer-horror on. British takes on classic Universal movie monsters. Some are fantastic, some are bad, and others are just so bad they are good for different reasons!

Well this could probably go on forever, but I'd rather not. So let me leave you with some fan made opening credits(although they might be the real thing, I certainly hope so) for my most anticipated new show of the fall season: "The Walking Dead" on AMC!

OMG ILLEGALZ!

So yesterday the story broke that Republican candidate for CA Governor Meg Whitman had employed an illegal alien as a housekeeper for a number of years and she swears she fired her as soon as she found out she was illegal....mmhmm...riiiiight. She is also accused of treating her housekeeper unfairly and exploiting her, whatever that means. Funny how a lot of the wealthy elite, who are such proponents of "Get rid of the illegals" rhetoric are the first to be caught employing them and having them work in crap conditions.

I don't for a second believe using Gloria Allred is the best route to be going with this "lawsuit" It is probably going to backfire and more people will be discussing Gloria Allred and her own past of sensationalism, rather than the actual merit of this ladies's claims(or lack of merit).

One thing for sure is, this one single story will get way too much attention, either ruin someone politically or vault them to a new position, while the bigger issue of immigration reform will be tossed aside once again for another round of rhetoric and demagoguery.

Checking in with my netflix que pt. 1

From time to time I will update everyone(no one)on my netflix viewings. I will include instant que as well as discs I get in the mail.

Right now the two discs I have out are:

Peacock "John Skillpa, a quiet bank clerk living in tiny Peacock, Nebraska, prefers to live an invisible life. This might have to do with John's secret: he has another personality no one knows about, a woman who each morning does his chores and cooks him breakfast before he starts his day. Then, in a moment, everything changes.." (imdb.com)

Babysitter Wanted "In a small college town, a young girl working on a babysitting job in a rural farm is terrorized throughout the night. " (imdb.com)

I have way too much in my instant que. Most of it are movies I have no immediately need to watch, stuff like Muppet Movies, Beetlejuice, some documentaries and other random films. A couple I do plan on getting to, are Survival of the Dead, and The Thin Red Line. Luckily both are available to stream in HD!

"Let Me In" comes out today...

So already having seen "Let the Right One In" (The swedish "vampire flick") I am noticing that "Let Me In"(American remake) seems to be getting pretty good reviews. None are going as far as to say it is better, however at the same time, saying it is a pretty good flick. I am interested in seeing it, but I don't really feel the need to go out and see it in the theater. I'm a huge fan of the original, I own the bluray(albeit the messed up subtitles version) and it was barely a year ago that I saw it. I just don't feel like spending $10 to see the same movie over again, even if it happens to be good. Making a "good" remake should not be considered an accomplishment if the original source material was already fantastic. Here's hoping enough other people go see this and find out it is a remake, and decide to seek out the original swedish film of barely a couple years ago.

RIP Greg Giraldo.....damn.

News hit today that Greg Giraldo died of an apparent accidental overdose of prescription drugs. That sucks, dude was pretty funny. He is most famous for being a roaster at most all of comedy central roasts. I also enjoyed seeing him as a judge on the latest season of Last Comic Standing....

RIP!

In case you hadn't heard.....I have a podcast now.

So something else pretty big I did over the summer was start a podcast with a couple good friends(Shawn & Doug). We had been toying with the idea for awhile, and decided to finally sit down, come up with an idea and do it to it. Well it is called "Retro Flick Fillet" Basically it the premise is that we re-watch a movie or movies we have already seen at least once for the show and then kind of do a compare/contrast as to how we though about them initially and how we feel about them now. So far we have three episodes recorded and posted, which you can find here:

http://idiotpod.libsyn.com/
  • Episode 1: Star Wars Prequels
  • Episode 2: Kickboxer & Bloodsport
  • Episode 3: Running Man & Total Recall
I know most people say you can't really have a successful podcast without an actual website to support it, but none of us take it serious enough to need to make it "successful" or "big" We are mostly doing it as an excuse to get together once a month and bullshit with each other over something we all like, which is movies. If it gets listeners and people like it, then that is a bonus, however that isn't the reason we are doing it. I think I can post a direct feed to it on this blog, I just have to mess with the settings to get it right. So look for that to pop up on here sometime soon. Also, don't be surprised to see the layout to change. I just changed it to the current layout to try something new, but it still looks pretty plain and bland to me. I will be messing with it shortly to spruce it up a bit, hopefully!

Shorter, more frequent updates...yeah that's the ticket

So I am trying to figure out how to maintain this blog more consistently than in the past and I think the problem before was I tried to have something long and drawn out to say everytime. So sometimes I would be ready to make a post and then not do it because I only had a few thoughts. This time around I think I will just update it whenever I have ANYthing to say.....regardless of what it is.....which leads me too the next blog post.....in a matter of seconds.....

Summa Summa Summa tiiiiiiiiiiime......

Well it has been another pretty good summer. I say that in the past tense as if the hot weather is over. Yesterday it was over 100 degrees and we are two days from October. Sacramento is known from going straight from Summer to Winter and vice versa, but this year is really pushing the boundary between that phrase being an exaggeration and actual truth.

As far as what I did this summer, I spent a few weekends river rafting. Had a blast. So much in fact that in the future I will be looking to invest in some higher quality rafts. The kind you can actually move around in and sit on the sides, not just the cheap inflatable ones you basically have to lay in. Don't get me wrong, those are fun too, but you feel a little bit helpless in them and not in very much control, plus it is nice to be sitting up on the raft rather than in it for obvious reasons, such as more room for the cooler of beverages!

I spent some down in Southern California, dabbled a bit in Hollywood, which was cool. The highlight of that trip was my adventure at SModcastle.(Kevin Smith's live podcast theater) Met up with a couple dudes I know via facebook and their podcast Bagged & Boarded. Had a blast. That was definitely the type of thing I would do a lot more often if I lived in closer proximity.

Had a few bbqs, but overall it was a down year for bbq gatherings. Not sure why, I guess time just flew by. Of course if you know me, the changing of seasons is hardly a reason for me to stop bbqing anyway......

I think that is about it outside the normal summer adventures me and my friends/family partake in every year. Just another typical long, hot California summer!

I'll be headed to apple hill for a day next month, hopefully it was cooled way down.

I'm bringing bloggin' back!

Yep, that's right, this here blog is making a return momentarily. Going to mess with the layout a bit and stuff.....stay tuned....

Stuff I geek out about!
